There are two things related to how life works that I am passionate about. Anyone who has known me for some time knows that I have a passion for demonstrating the process for transforming one’s thoughts and beliefs. Reshaping thoughts and beliefs is a skill that everyone has but very few use. The other thing that I have a passion for demonstrating is the process for supporting the body’s self-regulation capacity. The body maintains itself with its many self-regulating mechanisms. We’re either supporting those mechanisms or fighting against them.
When reaching a fork in the road, most of us are faced with a decision to choose the fellowship path or the self-power path to accomplish what we desire in life. The fellowship path is the path that is usually chosen by those with ambition. Recognition and acceptance is the reward on this path; it is more important to them than any of their other interests or beliefs or aims in life. The self-power path is the narrow road taken by a few people. Self-respect is the reward for those on this path; they have a deep and compelling conviction that some belief or aim or interest of theirs is more important than anything else in life. I have observed that some people are traveling on one of those paths.
There is, however, a third path that the majority of people are traveling on. The majority of people do not make a decision to travel either the fellowship or the self-power path. They find life satisfying as long as they can attain something the same or slightly better than the original environment that their parents set up for them. As long as they can have food, clothing, shelter, and recreation by merely holding down a job or getting governmental assistance, they are satisfied. Where are you? What path are you on? In which direction are you headed?

Yesterday, I was speaking with two gentlemen at Jackson Square Skilled Nursing Center in Chicago. This is the place where my daughter is recuperating from a stroke she suffered in July 2010. Both gentlemen made a point that our body is our temple and that we should take care of it. Ironically, both of them have lost some function of their respective bodies and they offer that advice to everyone because they know firsthand that they did not take care of themselves properly. Of course, they wish that they had.
I think that most people just live their lives without ever knowing how to become strong and healthy. Some even ignore the type of advice that the two gentlemen offered. So what I want to do in this post is to emphasize the importance of good health by presenting the observations of others that I have read over the years.
One piece of advice that I’ve read and cannot find the author of is this. “To perform your duties, you must possess great vigor, muscular and nervous strength, flexibility, endurance, and agility.” These are the metrics involved when you want to know how well you are doing in maintaining youthful feelings and wellness.
Another quote that I’m presenting focuses on the first thing to do when solving problems in life. It comes from a book entitled, the Essence of Reality by Thomas Nehrer.
“The advantage to an initial focus on health issues is twofold: first, it is conceptually easier to comprehend and accept the mind-body connection than more complex situations that entail relationships with others. And second, your health is of primary importance if you want to make significant progress through this incarnation. It wouldn’t be too wise to clear up all your relationship problems, set yourself on a marvelous career path, attain great abundance, then die young of physical maladies that you didn’t clear up early along the trail.”
This is an quote that I found on the “Society of Strength” blog:
“The great and important rule is this, ‘Splendid health means a successful and happy life; poor health and a weak body are great handicaps to both success and happiness.’ When men and women KNOW this to be true, why will they go along from year to year without making the efforts of their lives to correct the physical defects, when it means everything to them? It means the great joy that comes from “feeling fine” all the time. It means ambition, energy and great capacity for work. It means success in everything, financially and socially. The lack of health causes melancholy, depression and the “blues,” which within themselves are the forerunners of failure.”
The final quotation comes from John Reed’s book, Succeeding. Reed says, “To enjoy wealth, fame, family, friends, a satisfying career, you must be healthy…If you are not a health millionaire, being a wealth millionaire will probably be worthless to you at some point. You need to be both…It is also true that being a health millionaire aids you in becoming a wealth millionaire as well as with every other success goal in life. You cannot compete for high achievement against those who also desire it if you are not in good health.”
