The First Rule of Learning
Don’t go past a misunderstood word. Look it up in the dictionary.
This is the first rule of learning and it applies to everything in your life. It applies to school, your business, your job, your relationships, and so on. Here are some examples:
- Whenever you are reading and you go by a word that you don’t clearly understand, everything in that sentence is misunderstood. In fact, everything after that misunderstood word is lost. You come to the bottom of the page and ask yourself, “What did I just read?”
- Think about the times when you are in a conversation or you are listening to a speaker. You just yawned or found yourself nodding even though you are not tired. Well, you’ve heard something that you misunderstood.
Sometimes you think you understand something you are reading or listening to. But if you go blank, that is a sure sign that you have encountered a term or word that you don’t understand. My advice to everyone that I consult with is to take the time to get the right definition or explanation. Carry a good dictionary around with you or use a good electronic dictionary. Look up any words that you don’t understand. Observe how those words are used in a sentence and practice using them in your own sentences. You’ll be amazed at how well you can communicate when you fully understand the meaning of the words you are using.
The point:
The right definition of words and phrases increase your understanding and ability to communicate in language that’s easily understood.
